Growing my online presence
The embarrassing part about growing my online presence involves sharing anything about myself. Even writing "online presence" is tough.
But hey here we go.
Let's get to the embarrassment.
1. Graduation speech
First off, we have my vet school graduation speech.
I was honored to be elected by my classmates to speak at our hooding ceremony, which is like a pre-graduation ritual involving a great deal of reflection and self-congratulation. Maybe needed.
So anyway.
I gave this speech.
That's the dean there sitting beside me. Good sport.
Be warned, I look gaunt and big-eared in a graduation cap. I look like I might sail away on a breeze. I suppose vet school has that effect on people.
I am proud of this speech. I think it is funny and sincere.
I hope it is entertaining to those who weren't in our class.
My wife Emma made it a lot nicer than the first draft. Thank you, Emma. May all grievances remain private. May all injustices be forgiven. Shanti shanti etc.
2. McSweeney's piece
The other item on the list is a strange bit of writing that I'm overly proud of.
It's short and it was written a long time ago, but I still love the novelty and naivety. Someday I might channel this voice into a longer piece . Or maybe something this peculiar can only exist in miniature. Like a water bear.
Either way I hope this remains funny to at least one other person. I wonder how many people know who Hillary Duff is anymore? I wonder if she ever read it? Does she know she is loved? That we all are loved?
I also like how long the title is. I like long titles.
Did you know that long titles used to be more common?
For example did you know the full title of Robinson Crusoe, published in 1719, is The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, all alone in an un-inhabited Island on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having been cast on Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself. With An Account how he was at last as strangely deliver'd by Pyrates?
Well, it is.
